I’ve seen this same disappointment written across the faces of many would-be-great speakers whose goals remain out of reach. If they only knew how close they actually were! Here’s what I figured out about my daughter’s situation and the situation of many would-be-great speakers. She had the ability but did not have the skills. She had the ability to crawl but did not have the skills to get where she wanted to go. And, because of that, what she wanted was always out of her grasp. Many speakers I know definitely have the ability but they haven’t yet developed the skills to get what they want in speaking. What do they want? Usually it’s to… The worst thing you can do to yourself as a speaker is to work hard in the wrong direction. Think about it. What if you get lots of stage time but you keep practicing the wrong things? Could you be building the wrong habits?
